Mentor & Coach

I am a badass.

In a matter of weeks at a new high school, several students approached me to mentor them in various subjects because they could see I was making progress in my classes, and I could explain concepts in simple yet direct ways. Thus, began my transformation into a mentor and sharing my tips for success with others.

My approach to mentoring was simple: 1) identify the pain points for the student, 2) discuss ways the student could get passed those pain points, and 3) hold them accountable for the plan. My key to success as a mentor then was being assertive in badassery ways that students in that school had never seen. I had moved from a school environment where it was common to tell someone directly in the school halls, “Get the Fxxx out of my way.” While this is an example of aggressive communication rather than assertive communication, it's an effective example to showcase why it was easy for me to tell a student when necessary, “Just do it and get over yourself.” Most students at the new school were used to passive communication rather than hearing direct communication, especially from another student. I was clear, concise, and effective.

I also found some of my best role model mentors and coaches in high school. Track and field have been a passion of mine since I was 12 years old. I loved sprinting and long jump. My senior year of high school I was MVP and co-captain. As part of sprint relays, I set school records and made it to the state competition every year but never placed. Running is a life-long passion for me even today when I can no longer run without inducing significant pain. I live vicariously through my kids and close friends as well as enjoy running on my Octane Elliptical which I have found to be THE BEST low impact running alternative for me.

As an adult, I personally have benefited from having coaches, mentors, and even professional development cabinets. All have been intentional, as well as directed at personal and professional growth. My overarching objective for success was to make my mentors proud by seeing their advice and counsel put into action publicly not only to elevate my own leadership but also to advance leadership capabilities of others.

I make coaching and mentoring a priority not only for me, but for anyone in my organization. I continue to coach and mentor 3-5 individuals at any given time. I wholeheartedly believe coaching and mentoring bring as much value to mentors and coaches as it does to the mentees and those being coached. The mutual benefit and value are truly priceless.

Reading, writing, coaching, and mentoring – key pieces of ME since I was little. They are positive ways I share and continuously develop badassery. Sharing badassery transparently and authentically fuels passion in me.
